Acer Plans To Enhance High- and Low-end Laptops In Coming Months

Acer Aspire R7 At the IFA Berlin electronics trade show this year computer maker Acer has announced some hardware and styling updates coming to a few of their existing laptop lines. The updates touch the highest and the lowest levels of the Acer laptop family.

Starting at the top Acer announced they have made some changes to their revolutionary and very high-end R7 hybrid laptop. According to Acer the new R7 laptops they will be shipping later this year will offer Windows 8 users an active digitizer and stylus pen for more precise inking and sketching with the already touch-enabled 15.6-inch LCD the current R7 has now. The updates don’t stop their, a critique of the modern R7 when it was first unveiled is the lack of Haswell processors, now Acer says the new 4th generation Intel Haswell Core i-series processors will be coming to the digitizer-equipped R7 laptops.

The updated Aspire R7 hybrid laptop will carry a staring price tag of €999 (starting MSRP was only announced in Euros). For the more budget-conscience consumers out there Acer also announced they would be making some updates to their ultra-affordable Aspire E1 Series laptops. Acer reports that starting in mid-October their Aspire E1 Series, which includes laptops sized at 14- and 15.6-inches, will come equipped with touchscreen displays with 10-point multi-touch. The new touch-enabled affordable laptops will start at just €399 when they are made available next month.

Acer Aspire R7

Making it’s world debut in May the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire R7 introduced the world to a new display hinge design called Ezel hinge. Acer product designers developed the Ezel hinge to help create a new style of hybrid touchscreen laptop that offers users more than just two modes laptop and tablet. Leveraging dual hinge technology the Aspire R7 was introduced with four modes a users could enjoy computing in the new Windows 8 with. The R7 offers notebook mode, Ezel mode, tablet mode, and display mode. All four positions are shown in the graphic below. The Ezel hinge can achieve all the four positions thanks to dual hinge technology.

Acer Aspire R7 Ezel hinge modesWith its Ezel hinge and upcoming active digitizer the Acer Aspire R7 will be a premier touchscreen hybrid laptop that professionals and consumers will be able to appreciate. For a professional user the new built-in digitizer will very handy when using programs like Adobe Illustrator for digital content creation, and for consumers the ability to accurately select and edit small items in images with the digitizer will make image editing an even simpler task. For consumers Acer says they will include touch applications for image editing and scrap-booking that leverage the new digitizer.

Besides the useful hinge and digitizer the Acer Aspire R7 will also feature up to 12GB of DDR3 memory, up to 1TB of spinning hard disk storage or up to a fast 256GB solid state storage, a back-lit keyboard that is full-size, premium sound with Dolby Home Theater and four 8-watt stereo speakers, HD webcam with dual-array microphones, and Windows 8.1 OS. The 15.6-inch touchscreen display on the R7 has a native resolution of Full HD 1080p (1920-by-1080 pixels).

Acer Aspire E1 Series

Acer Aspire E1 RedThe affordable Acer Aspire E1 laptop series provides a more economical design that forsakes premium design elements such as aluminum for sturdy plastic. The lack of an all-metal design shouldn’t discourage you from considering these notebooks if you’re on a tight budget. Acer has tried to make the Aspire E1 range stylish with a good assortment of color options and a body design they describe as compact.

The 14-inch E1 models have Misty Silver, Piano Black and Keyboard White color options. The 15.6-inch E1 models feature Clarinet Black, Cherry Red and Steel Grey. Each E1 laptop comes with a chiclet keyboard and a generally compact design.

Looking past their exteriors the Acer Aspire E1 series does have the hardware options available to allow consumers to really get the most for their money. Acer offers both AMD (A-series) and Intel’s (Haswell) latest processors, or APU’s in the case of AMD. There are discrete graphics options from AMD (Radeon HD 8000M, 15-inch models only) and Nvidia (GT 720M, 14- & 15-inch or GT 740M, 15-inch only) that can turn your simple E1 into a light PC gaming laptop.

With 10-point multi-touch displays coming soon for the entire Aspire E1 laptop range Acer has increased the value proposition of the line. The touch-friendly features of the Windows 8 operating system will also be more attainable for every level of consumer once the touch-enabled E1′s start shipping in October.
